Search for almost any hotel on Google and the Business Profile on the right, or at the top on mobile, shows a prices section: a list of booking sites with the rate each one is offering for your dates. For many guests, that list is where the booking decision is made.

If your own website is not in that list, every guest who uses it books through someone who charges you commission. Getting your official rate listed is one of the most direct ways to win back bookings from people who were already searching for you.

Two ways to appear: free and paid

Google offers two placements in the hotel price list.

Free booking links are unpaid listings. Your official website appears alongside the OTAs, labelled as the official site, and you pay nothing when a guest clicks or books. Placement is decided by Google, much like organic search results.

Hotel Ads are paid placements in the same area, as well as on Google Maps and in Google’s travel search. You bid to appear more prominently, and you pay according to the bidding setup in your Google Ads account. Google also lets hotels use their Hotel Center feed with Performance Max for travel goals, which extends the same inventory across more of Google’s ad surfaces.

What you need to get listed

Both placements depend on Google receiving live prices and availability for your property. In practice that means:

  1. A booking engine or channel manager that is a Google integration partner. Ask your provider directly whether they support Google free booking links and Hotel Ads, and whether there is an extra fee. This is the single deciding factor.
  2. A Hotel Center account linked to your property’s Business Profile. Your integration partner usually helps with setup.
  3. Accurate prices. Google checks that the price shown in the listing matches what the guest sees on your booking page. Repeated mismatches, often caused by taxes or fees being added late, can get your listing restricted.
  4. A landing page that goes straight to the booking engine with the guest’s dates and room pre-selected, not to your homepage.

Hotel Ads versus brand search ads

These are different things and they work together. A brand search campaign is a normal text ad that appears when someone types your hotel’s name. Hotel Ads appear in the price comparison list and on Maps, and show your rate against the OTAs.

For most independent properties we set up brand search first, because it is quick and protects your name from OTAs bidding on it. Then free booking links. Then Hotel Ads, once tracking is in place and you can see what direct bookings they produce.

When paying for Hotel Ads is worth it

Paid Hotel Ads make most sense when:

  • Your property gets steady search demand and you already appear in free listings
  • Your direct rate or benefits are genuinely competitive against the OTAs
  • Your booking engine converts well on mobile
  • You can track bookings and revenue through to Google Ads

They make less sense for a small property with very little search demand, a booking engine that loses guests at the payment step, or no way to see which bookings the ads produced. Fix those first.

Measure what you get

Whatever you switch on, measure it. Free booking links traffic can be tagged so it appears separately in GA4, and Hotel Ads bookings need conversion tracking through your booking engine — which usually sits on a different domain and needs cross-domain tracking in GA4 set up properly.

The questions to answer every month are simple: how many direct bookings came from Google’s hotel listings, what revenue they produced, and what they cost compared with the commission you would otherwise have paid. That comparison tells you whether to spend more, spend less or leave it free.
