A hotel website has one job that matters more than the rest: turning a guest who is comparing options into a direct booking. Many of those guests found you on an OTA or on Google Maps and came to your website to check you out. They are already interested. The website just has to avoid losing them.
These are the twelve details we check first, roughly in order of impact.
1. A book button that never leaves the screen
On mobile, a “Book now” button should stay visible as the guest scrolls. On desktop, it belongs in the header of every page. Guests should never have to hunt for how to book.
2. Dates on the homepage
A simple date picker (check-in, check-out, guests) on the homepage that opens the booking engine with those dates already filled in removes a step. Every removed step keeps more guests on the path to booking.
3. A clear reason to book direct
State your direct booking benefit in a strip near the top of the homepage and on every room page: breakfast included, free late check-out, a better cancellation policy, a welcome amenity. If booking direct is not visibly better than booking on the OTA, many guests will use the app they already know.
4. Real photos of every room type
Guests want to see the room they will actually sleep in, including the bathroom and the view. Use recent, professionally lit photos of each room type, not one hero image repeated everywhere. Outdated photos create disappointed guests and poor reviews.
5. Room pages that answer the questions
Each room type deserves its own page with:
- Room size, bed type and maximum occupancy
- View and floor, if relevant
- Key amenities, listed plainly
- A “from” price per night, and what it includes
- A book button that opens the engine on that room
6. Location, explained
Show a map, the address and practical travel information: distance and travel time from the nearest airport, railway station and main attractions, parking, and whether the road is suitable for cars. For resorts in the hills or remote areas, this answers the question that stops many guests from booking.
7. Genuine reviews
Show recent reviews from Google or TripAdvisor, with the source named. Real reviews, including a less-than-perfect one with a thoughtful reply, are more convincing than a wall of five-star quotes with no names.
8. Speed on a phone
Most hotel website visits come from phones, often on mobile data. Large images and sliders are the usual cause of slow pages. Compress images, serve modern formats such as WebP, drop auto-playing video on mobile, and test the homepage and a room page on a mid-range phone. A page that appears in two seconds keeps far more visitors than one that takes six.
9. WhatsApp for questions
Many guests have one question before booking: is the pool heated, can we bring a dog, is there space for an extra bed? A WhatsApp button that is answered quickly converts those questions into bookings instead of lost visitors.
10. Offers with dates
A dedicated offers page with specific, dated packages — a long-weekend package, a monsoon offer, an anniversary stay — gives both guests and your ads somewhere concrete to point. Remove expired offers promptly.
11. Policies up front
Check-in and check-out times, cancellation terms, child and extra-bed policy, pet policy and ID requirements should be easy to find before the booking engine. Surprises at the last step cause abandoned bookings.
12. Tracking and structured data
Set up GA4 and cross-domain tracking through to the booking engine so you can see which channels produce bookings, as covered in our guide to hotel booking engine tracking. Add structured data for your hotel — name, address, amenities, price range and FAQs — so search engines understand the property clearly.
Test it like a guest
Once a quarter, pick up your phone, search your hotel on Google, open the website and try to book a room for next weekend. Time it. Note every moment of doubt. That fifteen-minute exercise will find more problems than most website audits.
If your website is the bottleneck, our travel and hotel website development service builds sites around exactly this path. For the full direct booking picture, read how to increase direct bookings for your hotel.
