Google captures people who are already looking for a hotel. Meta — Facebook and Instagram — reaches people who were not looking yet, and gives them a reason to. That makes it the natural channel for filling weekends, long weekends, festive periods and the quieter weeks that search demand alone does not cover.
It is also where a lot of hotel marketing budgets are spent on reach and likes that never turn into a single room night. The difference is in the structure.
Start with your feeder cities
Leisure hotels and resorts draw most of their guests from a small number of cities within driving or short-flight distance. A resort in the hills of Uttarakhand fills from Delhi NCR; a property in Lonavala fills from Mumbai and Pune; a homestay in Coorg fills from Bengaluru and Mysuru.
Target those cities first and tailor the message to them: driving time, the long weekend coming up, the weather they are escaping. A tightly targeted campaign in three feeder cities usually outperforms a broad campaign across the country.
Sell an offer, not just the property
“Beautiful resort in the mountains” is easy to scroll past. A specific, dated offer gives people a reason to act:
- A two-night weekend package with meals and an activity
- A long-stay or work-from-the-hills rate for weekdays
- Festive, anniversary or honeymoon packages
- Family packages with a second room or child stay included
Show a price anchor where you can (“from ₹X per night, breakfast included”). It filters out people who were never in range and makes the ad concrete.
Structure campaigns by temperature
| Stage | Audience | Message | Where it sends people |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold | Feeder cities, interests, broad | The experience and the offer | Offer or room page |
| Warm | Video viewers, Instagram engagers, site visitors | Rooms, reviews, what is included | Room page or booking engine |
| Hot | Booking engine abandoners, recent room viewers | Their dates, the direct booking benefit | Booking engine, dates pre-filled |
| Past guests | Your own customer list, with consent | Return-guest offer | Booking engine |
Keeping these separate lets you judge each stage on the right number. Cold campaigns are measured on cost per engaged visitor and assisted bookings; hot campaigns on direct bookings and revenue.
Creative that looks like the stay
Hotel ads that work tend to look like something a guest would post, not a brochure:
- Short vertical video walking into the room and out onto the balcony
- The view at sunrise, the pool in the evening, the breakfast spread
- Real guests, with permission, rather than stock models
- A carousel of room types with prices
- Reviews quoted word for word
Refresh creative regularly. The same reel shown to the same feeder city for two months stops working.
Send people somewhere that books
Where a Meta ad sends people matters as much as the ad itself. For standard room bookings, send them to a relevant room or offer page, or straight into the booking engine with dates pre-selected. For villas, group stays, weddings and events, a click-to-WhatsApp ad often works better, because these guests want to ask questions before they commit — as long as someone replies within minutes.
If your booking engine can send booking events to Meta, catalogue-based ads for hotels can also show people the exact property or room they looked at, with their dates. Ask your booking engine provider whether it supports this.
Measure bookings, not likes
Install the Meta pixel and Conversions API on your website and, crucially, on the booking engine steps, so a completed reservation is recorded as a purchase with its value. Without that, Meta optimises for clicks and engagement, which it is very good at finding and which rarely book. Our guide to tracking hotel bookings in GA4 covers the booking engine side.
Then judge campaigns on direct revenue against spend, compared with the commission those bookings would have cost through an OTA.
Timing
Launch campaigns for long weekends and festivals three to six weeks ahead, when people are planning, not the week before when rooms are already booked elsewhere. Use quieter periods to test new offers and creative at lower cost.
Meta will not replace Google or your OTA listings. Used well, it fills the gaps they leave. If you want help setting it up, see our Meta Ads for travel and hotels service, or read how it fits into increasing direct bookings.
